Having certified thousands of students and tested thousands of fiber spans, FiberOptic.com’s services division know as Adtell Integration has followed may other standards per customers requests, but recently worked on updating their testing standards to comply with the most stringent of standards in each respective category.

FiberOptic.com Fiber Characterization Standards

  1. Optical Insertion Loss (OIL) Testing
    • Link Budget Dependent
    • < .4 dB/KM at 1550 nm wavelength is optimal
  2. Optical Return Loss (ORL) Testing
    • > 27 dB Required
    • > 30 dB Preferred Target
  3. Chromatic Dispersion
    • < 20 ps/nm x km
  4. PMD
    • < 40 ps for 2.5 Gbps (OC-48)
    • < 10 ps for 10 Gbps (OC-192)
    • < 2.5 ps for 40 Gbps
    • < 1.25 ps for 100 Gbps
  5. PMD Coefficient
    • < 2.0 for 2.5 Gbps
    • < .5 for 10 Gbps
    • < .25 for 20 Gbps
    • < .125 for 40 Gbps
    • < .5 for 100 Gbps
  6. Splice Loss
    • < .1 for fusion splice
    • < .5 for mechanical splice
  7. Connector Loss
    • < .5 dB Required
    • < .3 dB Preferred / Target
  8. Connector Reflectance
    • > -27 dB Required
    • > -40 dB Preferred / Target
